Child with Reed

A masterful work in the art of cast iron sculpture.

The sculpture depicts a childlike, cherub-like figure embracing a bundle of reeds. The soft, rounded facial features and curly hair enhance its charming and delicate appearance. The figure’s gently inclined posture, with one knee raised, adds to its graceful composition. Thematically, this sculpture fits beautifully into a garden or water setting, seamlessly complementing its surroundings.

Mathurin Moreau was one of the leading sculptors of his time, working in the Romantic and Neoclassical styles, with a strong emphasis on elegance and meticulous detail. Many of his works were created in collaboration with the renowned Val d’Osne foundry and continue to adorn public spaces in France, Buenos Aires, Liverpool, and Geneva.

Beyond his artistic achievements, Moreau was also politically engaged, addressing the hardships of his era. Later in life, he served as Mayor of the 19th arrondissement of Paris until his passing.
